A friend told me definitely don't touch Norton 360, it slows your PC down too much. He suggested AVG free version. Version 9 I think is the latest one.

As a few folks have said already AVG or Avast free editions are both very good anti virus programmes. If ever I build a machine or look after one for a friend, the first thing I do is put a range of software on to try and keep them safe online.

There is also Comodo, but as it also has a firewall included it can be a bit of a pain at first when it alerts at everything until it has learnt what software you're using.

If you're using windows Microsoft have recently adde their Security Essentials package, which is getting some good reviews, but it doesn't have a firewall http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

You can find all of the above either on the home page of the company or from Filehippo (all downloads from filehippo are free from viruses and malware/spyware) who also have a range of other anti spyware/malware products and other useful software.

http://www.filehippo.com/

Filehippo also has an update checker programme, which will tell you if any version of your software such as Adobe Reader or Flash are out of date. Some nasties exploit weaknesses in older software versions so it's best to try and keep everything up to date if you can.

Hope this helps, if I can help any further please pop a post on here Smile

I have to say I've not had a single problem with virus infected stuff since putting Norton on. When I had the free stuff I was forever picking something up.

If you bank with Barclays you can get Kaspersky antivirus software for free. Just log in on online banking and it is at the bottom right hand side of the page when you are on your money page and you can download. It takes about 20 minutes to set us but very easy to follow instructions. My IT Manager at work told me about it and he says, as far as he is concerned, it is the best antivirus available.

I use AVG together with Zone alarm. It seems to be at least as effective as things like Norton and MacAffee (spelling?) Plus a lot of servers have built in firewalls, of course and will often filter out a lot of stuff before it gets to you.

Avast (Home) is a well proven anti-virus program. I would suggest that you also download and install Ad-Aware and either SpyBot or Malwarebytes. SpyBot runs in the background and will slow down your internet as it checks for adware/malware/trojans etc. Avast updated almost daily and automatically and can be set to start up immediately on boot up. I would also reccommend Ccleaner for getting rid of unused/discarded bites of data. It also has a registry cleaner which is useful.

Beware of a virus called Anti-Virus XP 2010. This will infiltrate your Microsoft Security Centre and tell you that you have a series of virus's. It uses the actual Microsoft Security Centre program and displays the page. It then asks you if you want your Microsoft Ant-virus to remove the various virus's. If you agree then your whole registry becomes infected and you will get an advert urging you to purchase some software, allegedly from Microsoft. You have to give your credit card details etc. There is no software but they take your payment and then of course have your credit card details.

It will take an experienced person at least 3-4 hours to painstakingly remove the virus....

Hope that helps..............
